Accounting Manager

The Accounting Manager is primarily responsible for the maintenance and reliability of the company’s financial accounting records. Building on experience in cost and financial accounting, the main goal is to ensure accurate financial reporting and continuous compliance with relevant accounting standards and practices. This role is responsible for overseeing key accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, monthly closings and budget-to-actual analysis. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for day-to-day management of accounting operations with a focus on efficient processes that support business needs, including purchasing/AP, reporting, etc. 

  • Manage bookkeeping staff. 

  • Responsible for timely and effective monthly close processes, including reviewing reconciliations, trial balance schedules and approval of journal entries. 

  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, management reports and variance analyses to support strategic decision-making. 

  • Monitor expenditures against budgets and provide actionable insights to optimize resource allocation. 

  • Support financial audits and ensure timely resolution of audit findings. 

  • Oversee and perform tax related inquiries and returns with applicable federal, provincial and state authorities, including for Canada, the USA and Australia. 

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve accounting procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including industry-specific financial practices. 

  • Maintain robust documentation and record-keeping systems to support compliance, audit readiness, and operational transparency. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. 

  • CPA designation, Master of Accounting or Master of Business Administration required. 

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in an accounting role required. 

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory compliance in a multi-currency organization required. 

  • Proven hands-on experience with Australian accounting practices, either through direct work experience in Australia or by managing accounting operations for an Australian entity (including familiarity with local regulations, tax requirements, and reporting standards), an asset. 

  • Familiarity with grant accounting and R&D cost tracking, an asset. 

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite knowledge, specifically with Microsoft Excel. 

  • Experience working in Quickbooks, Dext, NAB Connect.

REPORTING

  • This position reports to the Director, Finance.
